Eske Willerslev who led the effort to sequence the genome of a neanderthal.
He was coming to the UK to present at a meeting and I offered to drive him from the airport in London to the meeting in Cardiff. That sounds boring, but I got to spend 5 hours with my idol!!
My favourite scientists are my former supervisor and some previous colleagues of mine, whom I used to work next to, have now moved on to lead their own laboratories. Thinking about ‘famous’ scientists, I have always had a scientific ‘crush’ on Marie Sklodowska-Curie 🙂
I am very interested in conservation, so Jane Goodall is a favourite of mine. Closer to my field, Madeline Lancaster is doing very cool work (growing mini brains in petri dishes!) and Edith Heard (Director General of EMBL) is probably the most inspiring to me within my field. As a female scientist, I find it very important to have role models who are not all white men… 🙂
