About Me:
I work in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland as a genetics research fellow by day, mad scientist by night. I like cycling, playing music, building things, video games and snacking in front of the TV!

I studied science in college and finished my PhD in genetics at Trinity College Dublin. I now pursue my own research interests as a research fellow.
I used to play keyboards in bands on the radio, electric picnic and other festivals and on Spotify. I recently gave it up to focus on some cool ongoing research.
I support open-source science, such as free access to scientific articles and access to designs for building your own DIY lab equipment. I spent a lot of my free time 3D printing things for the lab to allow us to do new experiments or to make things easier.

Genetic therapy development usually involves engineering a virus to have a new job. We take out any bad bits and replace it with our own genetic sequences. From there we test it to see how well it works and make sure its safe. If it all works as expected, we write up and publish our findings or write a patent to claim the new technology. I work at all stages of this development. I design and test the sequences in the lab, make the virus and test the virus in the lab in cells or in animals. I then usually write up the data and present it to people we work with or potential investors.

My Typical Day:
I am not a morning person. I get to work at around 10:30am and catch up with students about our work. After having a look at emails in my office I then set up some experiments for the day. I grab lunch with colleagues and then either carry out experiments or plan upcoming projects. I usually leave the lab around 6 or 7 depending on how busy I am.

Luckily my work is flexible in that I do not have to be in for a certain time every day, however it is instead usually determined by the experiments as they might need attention at certain times. As a research fellow my time is split between experimenting in the lab and planning/organising/writing in my office. I also help out colleagues and other students who are working on similar projects and chat about ideas.
I work in the city centre so I get lunch somewhere different everyday which is nice. Home time normally depends on what experiments I have set up that day, but everyday is different and it doesn’t get boring!

What I'd do with the prize money:
I’d love to get an episode on a professionally produced podcast called ResearchPod to promote my work and teach others.
-
Education:
Graduation date: November 2018
PhD in Genetics / Trinity College Dublin
Graduation date: November 2014
B.A. (Mod.) Genetics / Trinity College Dublin
-
Qualifications:
Leaving cert (Ireland) at 17.
Degree in Science (specialised in Genetics) at 22 in Trinity College Dublin.
PhD in Genetics at 25 in Trinity College Dublin.
-
Work History:
I started working with a company who programmed and installed home networks and audio systems like home cinemas.
During University I worked with a brick restoration company for a summer, cleaning the outside walls of old buildings and restoring the stonework.
Another summer in University I decided to get an internship (research assistant) in University College Dublin, where I learnt how to manipulate genetic sequences in bacteria.
I worked in Trinity College Dublin Ocular Genetics Unit where I completed my PhD thesis in 3.5 years (typically 4) entitled “A novel gene-based therapy for glaucoma: from discovery to pre-clinical development” involving the selection of a therapeutic agent, target, delivery system, and proof of efficacy.
-
Current Job:
I currently work in Trinity College Dublin Genetics department as a Research Fellow, where I continue working on gene therapies. I research how new therapies work and develop them with our campus company to one day get them to a place where they can be used in people to prevent blindness.
