I tutored a student when I was 16. I help him with his school homework although it was challenging as he didn’t pay too much attention to anything. I also taught Spanish to my landlords’ kids as the same time as I was working in research. Now I do research and I am also lecturer so it is like a double job really.
Before I was a scientist I had several jobs. I worked in a chocolate factory during school holidays, in a book shop on weekends and evenings while I was at University. I also worked in a Blockbuster video store for a few months and an electronics shop for a christmas period. My last job before I got into sceince was working for a construction company for a summer.
Before my current job I did a PhD for 4 years. This was kind of like a job in the sense that I was paid a stipend (around 14-15k per year I think). Before that I was a bartender for a while.
Yes, before my current job I worked in a lab for 4 years while I was doing my PhD. It’s very different to the work I do now but it was exciting to make that change – I was ready for a new challenge!
Before my postdoctoral Research Scientist job I did a PhD, but before that I also worked as a waitress one evening a week whilst I was studying for my undergraduate degree. I also did some tutoring and babysitting whilst I was doing my A Levels. And during the summers of my undergraduate study I worked as admin bank staff at my local hospital in Cambridge which involved being assigned to the biochemistry and histopathology laboratories, the patient survey data processing team, and the reception of the hearing implant centre.
