Hi Alise, Yes I do love what I do, I am doing a PhD in genetics and I find it very interesting. Of course some days it can be challenging but over all I love what I do.

Absolutely. Like with any job, there are good days and bad days, but putting all the pieces of the puzzle together makes it worth it.

I absolutely love it. I always wanted to be lecturer and have the opportunity to combine teaching with research. Both areas come full of challenges and responsibilities associated but are very rewarding overall.

Most of the time 😉 My job is very interesting and I love this aspect of it. Sometimes things can get very stressful and challenging but I think this applies to any job. What really makes a difference for me is that I work in a very nice lab, with very supportive colleagues and managers.

Yes I absolutely love what I do! I always wanted to work in healthcare or in science and the fact I can do both is great. It does get stressful sometimes when it’s particularly busy but even on days like that I still love what I do.

Yes, overall I love what I do. There’s been challenges along the way, especially during my PhD going through stretches of time where my experiments weren’t working, but I still can’t imagine doing anything else. There’s aspects of my training now that I don’t love (final assessments, deadlines etc) but I can’t wait to be qualified to do the job I’m working towards.

Yes. I absolutely love to explore the path to discover new things. Some days are challenging, but most of the time I have fun investigating genes.

I love what I do probably 95% of the time. Sometimes it can be frustrating when things go wrong and stressful when the workload piles up, but it would be boring if it was easy!

Not always. Sometimes, it’s boring and repetitive. But you find other things to do to relax and enjoy life. Finding new things to work with is inspiring and rewarding.

I absolutely love what I do! For me, a science career, especially a research career, seems to have as many lows as highs. While I am thrilled on the days when experiments work well, enjoying and loving what I do makes it possible to get through the days when nothing seems to work.

Yes, I definitely do! Yes, indeed I do have bad days but that just motivates me to come back and get the best out of it, and that is why I say I love science. It is a joy to wake up everyday, go into the lab, do the experiments, get the results… it keeps my dopamine running high 🙂

Absolutely! The more I work in science the more I love it. When I was younger I was a bit worried that I might get bored in the lab if I became a scientist but this wasn’t the case at all!! The stereotype of a scientist is that he or she is in a stuffy lab all day alone, but it wasn’t until I started working as a scientist that I realised this was totally false.

I love the balance I have at work between lab work and desk/written work. I like the independence I have where I get to design and carry out my own experiments. My work is really flexible, I get to organise my hours, depending on my experiments.

Its really beautiful knowing the work I am doing will hopefully help peoples lives for the better 🙂

As with most things, there are ups and downs. Most of the time I really enjoy research and working in the lab. However, at times, working in the lab can be a bit boring or frustrating, for example trying to solve techincal issues with an experiment. But when you do finally solve the problem and get some interesting new data then the highs usually outweight the lows.

I do! Some days it is hard as some of the work can be repetitive and long, but I find it helps to think keep things in perspective by reminding myself why I do research – I get to learn every day, help people, look for things that no one has ever seen before and work with really smart people too!
